At 4:30pm on October 4, 2017, members of the Oberlin community gathered on Tappan Square for the dedication of the gingko sapling pictured above. It was grown in the greenhouse from a seed Tomoko Watanabe of Green Legacy Hiroshima brought to Oberlin in September 2015. The direct descendent of a tree that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, this sapling honors the resiliency of nature and reminds us of the human and environmental impact of nuclear weapons and war. After an opening performance by Oberlin College Taiko, this event included remarks by Ann Sherif, President Ambar, Michael Moore, and Green Legacy (read by Taiyo Scanlon-Kimura ’15).
