Green Legacy Tree Tour 2024
Thursday, November 12, 2024. Peters 130 and Tappan Square

The first Green Legacy tree tour of the year took place on November 12, led by Kana Sakamoto ’26 and Professor Albert Miller. The tour highlighted the ginkgo tree, which is the second-generation hibaku jumoku (a-bombed tree), and the new elm tree, which commemorates the 200th birthday of George Boyer Vashon, Oberlin’s first African American graduate. The event began with an introduction in Peters 130 before the group proceeded to Tappan Square, near the Memorial Arch. Professor Miller delivered an inspiring speech about George Boyer Vashon’s life and the deep connection between the land and its history. Kana Sakamoto then shared her experiences visiting hibaku jumoku in Hiroshima, emphasizing the significance of the second-generation tree in promoting peace-building initiatives both locally and globally. Participants reflected on the stories of the trees and enjoyed the nearby nature together with others. Roughly thirty students, faculty, and community members attended the event.
