Perdue focused on how examination of international politics and state intervention are involved in studying these different trades in the forests, hills, and seas of China. All three trades have led to increased intercultural globalization, but also a significant loss of natural life.

One student asked how in the face of such loss, how can our population survive with less consumption of goods? In other words, how can China, and the world more generally, be more eco-friendly? To which Professor Perdue responded that many optimistic engineers have and will continue to come up with more sustainable agricultural practices, but that the problem as a whole is more political than technical. He continued in saying that the “good news” was that China is the world pioneer in wind and solar technology, and that the Chinese government strongly believes in global warming. Further, China educates more engineers and takes engineering more serious than many other places in the world. While significant damage has been done, there is hope for a better, more sustainable future.

Later in the day, Professor Perdue met with staff of the Department of History, East Asian Studies, and Dean’s Office to discuss the future of Chinese and Environmental History in the Oberlin College curriculum.
